AHL’s Manchester Monarchs appoint former NHL player Freddy Meyer as assistant coach
Freddy Meyer, a former professional ice hockey player, who took retirement from ice hockey after this season, has been appointed as the assistant coach of the American Hockey League’s (AHL) team Manchester Monarchs.
The announcement was made by team’s general manager Ron Hextall on Wednesday that former NHL player would be joining his organisation.
Meyer, a 31-year-old former defenseman, started his ice hockey career with Boston University in Hockey East (HE). He was undrafted by signed by Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL) on 21st May 2012.
The Sanbornville, New Hampshire native joined Flyers’ AHL affiliates Philadelphia Phantoms for played for them in 2003-2004 season. He made his NHL debut for the Flyers in the same season as he played in just one game and then was sent back to Phantoms.
Meyer was an integral member of their team that won Calder Cup in 2004-2005 season. Even then he was traded out by Flyers on 16th December 2006 in exachange of Alexei Zhitnik of New York Islanders.
Next year he made a move to Phoenix Coyotes and then moved to San Antonio Rampage in the AHL before coming back to New York Islanders.
In 2010-2011, he was acquired by Atlanta Thrashers as an unrestricted free agent before his last season of hockey with Modo team in Sweden.
Meyer was very delighted to be affiliated with Manchester Monarchs, Stanley Cup champions Los Angeles Kings as he said,
"It is a great honor to be the next Assistant Coach of the Manchester Monarchs and to be part of the Los Angeles Kings organization. Growing up in New Hampshire and playing youth hockey throughout New England, I look forward to returning to the Granite State
and getting my coaching career started."
General Manager Hextall was also very happy to avail the services of the player who has got so much knowledge, love for the game and also won Calder Cup as player, as he said,
“We are extremely pleased to bring Freddy on board as a member of the Monarchs coaching staff. His experience, knowledge and passion for the game will further enhance the Monarchs and the further development of our young players. He has also won a Calder
Cup Championship”.
