Question:

AIR CONDITIONER ISSUE, inside works but outside unit no?

My air conditioning unit outside is having a problem. The insulated cable in there (the one with a metal wrapper) fell into the blades last night. I heard it but I did know what it was. I called for service as I think I don't want to just take them out of the way and fix it myself, I been here 4 years and I think a maintainance call is due. What I want to know is this, last night I didn't know about this and the air was on. What harm would I do if I choose to turn the air on inside my house without this outside unit working. It's really hot......help please....thanks.

  1. Circulating the fan without the outside unit (compressor and heat exchange fan) will not do anything to make you feel cooler.  If anything it will make things worse if there is any condensate collected on the A-coil or in the condensate pan in the inside unit.  If there is water there, running the fan will raise the humidity in your house, making it feel muggy.  If you need a fan on, use a box fan or a ceiling fan until you can get the outdoor unit fixed.

  2. it depends on if the wiring outside is shorted, you could possible burn out the windings in the compressor. go outside and there will be an electrical box near the a/c unit. open the box and pull the fuse out, this will allow you to run the inside fan without the compressor getting any power. it's not going to do any cooling but will circulate the air.

  3. The vent might be clogged. Try checking the filter or the engine.

  4. No harm at all if you shut off the power to the ouside unit.Otherwise the compressor could be damaged. With the power off you can probably repair the wiring issue yourself with ease and save a couple hundred dollars in the process.Try it ,I bet you can do it unless the fan blade got bent, you can cancel the service call, and save some money !
