AJ Green set to return this week
Georgia Bulldogs’ star wide receiver AJ Green is set to return to action after serving a four-week suspension, which was handed down by the NCAA in late August.
Green was suspended after it was revealed he had sold his Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000 to former North Carolina and Marshall player Chris Hawkins. The NCAA determined that Hawkins was an agent and Green had received improper benefits.
The suspension was linked to an NCAA investigation which tied agents to several schools in both the SEC and ACC. The students were receiving benefits from the agents before they had signed with them, which goes against NCAA policy. The NCAA states that a
student athlete must inform the school’s athletic director 72 hours after they have signed with an agent.
Green spoke about the investigation and the subsequent suspension, saying. “It was just a painful process. I’m not the type of guy who ever got in trouble here or stuff like that. Sometimes I couldn’t sleep just thinking about stuff like that. It was a painful
process. I’m glad it’s over.”
The Bulldogs will also be glad that Green is finally able to play, as the club has stumbled to a terrible 1-3 record, which includes a 0-3 record against their conference. The poor start finds the Bulldogs sitting in last place in the SEC East.
Nevertheless, Green should provide a major boost to the Georgia offence, which is sitting at 73rd in the nation. The junior managed 808 yards last season to go along with six touchdowns. In his two year career at Georgia, Green has managed 1,771
yards and 14 touchdowns.
Quarterback Aaron Murray was excited to get Green back but mentioned that the team, as a whole, needs to improve, stating, “He’s definitely going to help us. It’s nice having him back. But as a whole we’ve got to step up our game.
Georgia will head to Colorado on the weekend to take on the Buffaloes.
