I am going to visit London with my family for a week. I read that OYSTER CARDS for children take 2 weeks to be issued, so I was adviced to buy a travelcard for me and an off peak day ticket for my 13 years old daughter. My question is...

Do I have to buy this off peak day ticket every day... is it a sort of 1 day travelcard for children?

  1. Yes, I'm afraid so. The 'Accompanied Child Day Travelcard' has to be bought each day. If they didn't do that, people would abuse the system, no doubt. An adult with just a one-day travelcard could buy 20 Accompanied Child Day Travelcards and then have his/her kids travel for a £1 on days where the adult is not carrying a travelcard or just resell them or who knows what else.

It really is more of an offer (and a really good one!) than a travelcard. This particular travelcard is better known as 'Kids for a £1':

  2. If you buy a 7 day TravelCard for yourself, you can buy 7 one day £1 tickets for your daughter at the same time.

  3. Don't buy a ticket every day.

If you're only coming as a tourist on a one off visit, don't waste your time applying for the photo oystercard for your daughter, you can get an oystercard for her at the same time as you get your own and get her a weekly travelcard on it or just load it up with cash but you'll probably have to pay adult fare for her - the best people to give you advice on this will the person in the ticket office in an Underground station.

If you live outside London & you're going to be a frequent visitor it might be worth investing in the photo oyster card for your child but if you're coming from outside the UK I wouldn't bother
