  1. 1.  People pay me to do what I love to do: design electronic circuits, and design software to control it.

    2.  There's always a mathematical challenge weekly, if not daily.  Frequently involves 3rd year (university) calculus.  But hey, I enjoy it.  There's also challenges in balancing trade-offs between what the customer wants, and what present technology can provide.

    3.  Sitting in a cubicle with an awesome laptop, writing code, simulating circuits, building prototypes, drinking coffee, spending a couple days a month 'in the field' - travelling to see installations / tests.

  2. 1 the $

    2 score with the receptionist

    3 cruise

  3. 1. Pride of accomplishment.  You get to see your designs in use that are part of something important.  Once I got to see the fruits of my labor avert a major environmental disaster.  Every time a Delta, Atlas, or Sea Launch rocket goes up my designs are there.

    2. For consumer applications sometimes designers have it easy -- they get to use the latest components specifically for their applications.  It is almost a matter of hooking up a few ICs sometimes.  For space applications the challenge becomes using older, proven technologies in new ways, or trying to gain a little more performance out of older technology parts.  Even something like a simple resistor can become a challenge to design with when you have to take into account aging, radiation, 2nd and 3rd-order thermal effects.  Consumer electronics designers do not have to take these 2nd and 3rd-order effects into account.

    3. I sit in a cubicle at my PC workstation and use simulation tools for both analog and digital (SPICE, ModelSim, etc), analysis tools (MathCAD, MatLab, Relex, Excel, etc.), Drawing tools, and others.  Generally I am either designing new circuits or performing analyses on the same.  When appropriate, I will go to the electronics lab to check out my latest design.

  4. 1) Probably the money. Engineers are not rich, but we make a respectable living. This is not just about being able to buy all kinds of cool things; it's about knowing you're financially secure.

    2)

    a) Getting the degree in the first place. I thought school was pretty hard.

    b) Feeling like I still don't know nearly enough. I'm fresh out of college, and most of work is not like college. Most of the time it is experience that makes a good engineer, and I don't have enough experience yet.

    3) Varies from day to day. Some days are really boring, and other times I'm crawling around inside a vehicle testing something out. Too much to do, and too little; these are both things that happen in a week.

I spend most of my time at a computer.

The people I work with are cool.

My boss is cool, and so is my bosses boss.

    I have it lucky.
