ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne: Carlos Aguilar finishes 4th due to inconsistent performance
Carlos Aguilar finished tied for the 4th position at the ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne, as he shot a 5-over 280 in total.
The 30-year-old Spanish scored well in the first two rounds and secured the leading position. However, due to a mediocre performance in the final round, he dropped to the 4th.
He started the round well and scored four birdies and three bogeys on Thursday. He competed well throughout the day and gave a tough time to other contenders, at the Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André in Pléneuf, France.
Then in the second round, he displayed an improved performance and amazed the spectators on the front nine holes.
He started the round with a bogey and then made four consecutive birdies from 4th to 7th hole. Then on the back nine holes, he added two more birdies and one bogey.
Aguilar scored a 4-under 66 and reached the top of the leaderboard. He was so happy and confident that he set his eyes on the title of the European Challenge Tour.
“The long shots were quite difficult to judge, because the wind was stronger than yesterday and from a different direction, and it was also cooler. But hopefully the weather tomorrow will be better,” Aguilar said.
“I will have to play my best to have a chance to win, because the standard on the Challenge Tour is very high. But I can't worry about what anyone else is doing – I just have to play my own game,” he added.
“I had some nice messages from friends and family after my round yesterday and I'm sure I'll have some more today, so hopefully I can make them happy. But it doesn't depend on them – it's all down to me now".
However, he was unable to play as he planned. He shot a 72 in the third round and finished at par. In the last round of the event, he lost his focus and chances to win the title.
He scored a 5-over 75 on Sunday. He dropped to the fourth position as he shot seven bogeys, one-double bogey and only four birdies throughout the day.
Inconsistent score pulled him down to a lower position, as he finished at-par and three strokes behind the leader Eddie Pepperell. Now, Aguilar has to practise a lot and needs to learn about consistent scores.
