AM Fowler clinches her second gold medal in 200m IM – Australian Age Multi Class Championships
AM Fowler of Nepean Aquatics clinched her second gold medal of the session by winning the 200m Individual Medley (IM) in Girls 11 to 15 years old age group, on the primary day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class Championships.
The session completed at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), in Canberra, on Friday, October 7. The 14-year-old Fowler went full throttle in the four-lap IM discipline and grabbled the gold medal of the event. Fowler, who is S14, took-off from the starting
blocks in full form.
She dictated her way to the first turn with a timing of 34.84 seconds and started her back-stroke swim of the event. Fowler was in a lead of almost five seconds over her following competitor, Ma Elliott of Novocastrian, who completed her first lap in 39.67
seconds.
The 14-year-old went rampant in her second lap, devastating the hopes of her challengers and extending her lead to almost eleven seconds with an effort of 1 minute and 19.73 seconds. The arena was surprised to see her pace in the third-lap of the event,
where she remained the fastest breast-stroke swimmer and hit the finishing wall to end her swim in 2 minutes and 11.53 seconds.
After the third-lap, Fowler dashed towards the finishing wall, showing her urgency for the crown and touched the wall in 2 minutes and 51.83 seconds. With her exceptional swim in the IM event, she remained nearly eighteen seconds ahead of her following swimmer,
Elliott, who reached the podium for silver medal with a timing of 3 minutes and 09.44 seconds.
Elliott was followed by a swimmer with S9 disability, McConnell of Melton, who secured bronze finish of the four-lap event by producing a time of 3 minutes and 03.45 seconds.
Fowler expressed happiness over her second victory in the first session of the national age group competition. In addition, the champion articulated her hopes of continuing the same in future endeavours, as Fowler wants to represent her country at the elite
levels of swimming.
