AM Fowler secures 400m freestyle gold medal: Day one - Australian Age Multi Class Championships
Nepean Aquatic’s Am Fowler secured gold medal of 400m freestyle in Girls 11-15 years old category on the opening day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class Championships. The competition is being organised at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra,
on Friday, October 7.
The 14-year-old Fowler, who has S14 multi-class disability, surprised her opponents by clinching gold medal of the event. With her impeccable seed time, she was the top contender to clinch the title, but her furious efforts crushed the hopes of her competitors,
as she remained more than a half pool length ahead of her closest rival, Ma Elliott of Novocastrian.
Fowler took a lead of almost four seconds over Elliott in the first lap of the swim, and with her continued smothering efforts, she kept on enhancing her lead over the 12-year-old rival. Her overwhelming performance kept shattering the hopes of her rivals,
as she extended her lead to almost seven seconds in first round, twelve in the second, eighteen in the third round and nearly twenty-four seconds in the final stint.
With her splashing performance, she seized the title of the eight-lap freestyle swim by clocking a time of 5 minutes and 18.79 seconds. The champion remained in a prominent lead over Elliott, who followed her on the podium for the silver medal by submitting
an effort of 5 minutes and 42.66 seconds.
Elliott also made optimum use of her skills and kept her following swimmer, Thomas of McCredie Park at bay by 12.02 seconds. The 13-year-old Thomas, who has the S10 and B9 multi-disability, secured the podium for bronze medal by producing a noteworthy effort
of 5 minutes and 54.68 seconds.
The podium completed with Thomas’s incredible effort, while the arena applauded for laudable swims of all multi-class age group specialists. Furthermore, the podium finishers were called upon the podium for their commendable efforts in the freestyle event.
The championship will continue for two more days and conclude after all scheduled meets complete in the Girls and Boys category.
