AM radio recepton - what the h**l happened to it?! did they do that sick deal where they run digital through?

the electric line and it screws up AM reception the same way a nearby microwave can? Seems like it. AM in the car is still fine.

That Sick Deal is called BPL or broadband on Power line and it's been a total failure everywhere it's tried but some companies still think they can get something for nothing and try it.  It uses the power lines to carry broadband digital signals which radiate all over the spectrum.  Good luck.  The other thing you may be hearing is the result of AM radio HD.  It does add some good sound to music on AM stations, but sounds poor on voice and tends to s***w up a couple of channels on either side.  Most companies are not running it at night due to the potential for interference.  The company promoting and licensing HD radio built a good thing for FM radio then tried squeezing the same concept in to AM where it's an abysmal failure. Many of us professional broadcast engineers are predicting it's total failure and removal from service within a few years.
