OKAY, I have asked about BLW before and people have given me some really good websites etc etc BUT I'm still scared. Here's the thing...My daughter is 7 months old and she very rarely will eat any baby food at all and I have been trying for months. Today I was snacking on Raw green peppers and she was sucking on one but she bit a chunk ( she has 2 almost 3 teeth ) and I got so nervous! I know she should only have soft things but I'm nervous with anything. She seems to want to feed herself but how will she know how to swallow her very 1st bite???????????????????????? Should I give her like a piece of cantaloupe or watermelon, HOW THIN? What about a carrot that's been steamed in a bag or something. I know I sound stupid but I'm just scared, help!

  1. First of all RELAX!!!!!!!!! Why are so nervous?? It's ok if she doesnt like much baby food, right now she should be getting all her nutrients from formula/breastmilk. Solids are just to get her used to eating real food. Start by switching foods, or mixing them with sweets, I mean sweet foods, such as pureed plums, etc.

If she has 3 teeth, she can chew on some things... cut them very small, the same with carrots, very small. Though I'd still try pureed, maybe no strained, just pureed maybe by yourself if you can? So they're a bit thicker in texture. Some kids seem to be way ahead, my son was the same way. He was eating a burger by the age of 1! (veggie burger) And my daughter was quite happy with baby food.

It's not about how thing, it's about how small, cut things in lil squares. She could also eat some cheerios at this age.

Dont worry so much, things are fine!

  2. you could juice her foods and gradually chop more of it and juice less of it as she goes on until she is eating complete solid food. She won't know any different

  3. Stop worrying, stop with the baby food, and just use common sense and close supervision. You can steam or saute peppers to make them easier to gum up, but hard foods aren't really such a problem. Apple, sliced thinly enough to gum easily but not thin enough to fall apart -- try about 2-3mm -- works great.

How will she know how to swallow it? Same way she knows how to swallow milk.

Steamed broccoli is ideal -- the stem makes a good handle and the leaves just gnaw right off.

    As far as peppers go:

She's just under 1yr -- a bit different from a 7mo -- but, she has only recently acquired two nubbins of molars; the pepper is still chewed up by the gums.

  4. she will naturally know how to swallow/chew. her teeth are growing in she needs hard foods. so try cutting up baby carrots in sizes that will require her to chew like |   | that thick at the most

  5. at first try something mushy to ease your mind.  you could try ripe avocado or banana first (give her some chunks to eat)

my 7 month old eats pasta, baked cinnamon carrots (baked soft then sliced into long thin strips so he can bite off little pieces), steamed asparagus spears are good and so is steamed broccoli because they are easy for the baby to pick up and bite pieces off.  you could also take some cheese ad slice it into long thin strips so she can pick it up and bite pieces off.  ripe peaches and plums are good because they are soft.  baked apples are good..

my son has no teeth and chews everything fine.
