Question:

ANY DOCTORS OR PHARMACISTS OUT THERE? A question about discontinued drugs?

I've taken Levsin for years. My doctor called me in a refill and when I went to pick it up the pharmacist said that Levsin (hyoscaimine) and it's generics were no longer in existance and production for the drug has been discontinued. Can anyone tell me if this is true? I know drugs are pulled because of their side effects sometimes, but this drug has been out for decades. I there a website that lists discontinued drugs? Any info would greatly be appreciated.

  1. Just type in the name of your drug in the web search, this will list you a choice of information. Good luck.

  2. It looks like Schwarz Pharma, the manufacturer of Levsin (hyoscyamine), simply stopped making it. This was most likely due to financial considerations, but was unable to find an notice on their web site. The generic is usually available; however, it's possible that the generic manufacturer has also stopped or has transferred their license to another manufacturer (and the new one isn't making it yet).

Other manufacturers may still make a branded version; ask your pharmacist about:

    Symax

    Anaspaz

    Buwecon

    Cystospaz

    Donnamar

    NuLev

    Neoquess

I checked Symax, which is made by Capellon Pharmaceuticals and it's still available here in the US. I have *not* checked the other brands, and some may be names for the medication in Canada or Europe.

Don't stop pestering your pharmacist. Or even better, have the doctor call him. Good luck!
