ANY VETS ONLINE NOW?

Last night me, my mom and my little brother went to an animal shelter to adopt a dog. We found a wonderful dog named Jazzy. Jazzy had given birth to a puppy, and the puppy had been given to a new home.

They told us she was spayed yesterday (two days from today) so she still has her stitches and all, ya know. And she was acting very calm Im guessing some of that is from the surgery, we dont know Jazzy too well yet but they told us she was perfect for our living conditions.

Anyway, we brought her to Petsmart yesterday to get her stuff, my mom had to pick her up to put her in the car and all and she seemed fine. Btw shes a lab mix. Weighs maybe 30-40 pounds we dont know much about her history. Last night when my mom was petting her, she was very content. Then she let out a quick yelp. It was high-pitched and so it scared us but then she was fine again. Then today when she was home with me, sometimes she would be sitting in the diningroom and I think she was scared because she heard something and she did it some more.

Then later tonight my mom layed down on the floor with her and didnt even touch her and she started yelping for like 30 seconds. And it seems whenever my mom lys on the floor. But she acts like she is in pain and has trouble getting up during it and then she just walks away.

We are concerned what this is about adn we dont know if it has to do with the surgery or something totally different. Any help would be appriciated.

  1. Talk to your vet.  That's the most important bit of information you can get from a situation like this.

To ease your mind a bit, it may, in fact, be nothing wrong.  My puppy would randomly scream and cry for several minutes holding up her little paw, limping around, throwing a fit.  A whole show just to get my attention, but there was absolutely nothing wrong.

Because your pup just had surgery, though, and you are unsure of her history (I knew my puppy's history from conception to birth) then the vet is the safest and best bet.

  2. You should take her to a vet ASAP to see whats wrong.

Did they not tell you what might happen after the surgery as in the symptoms?

    They should of.

But anyways you DEFF. should take her to the vet.

Sorry I'm not a vet though.

    But it sounds VERY serious!

  3. It may be the way she is sitting or laying. You should never elevate a dog that has been spayed. The glue or stitching may be pulling at the incision.

If it continues, contact your vet and explain the circumstances.

There is a possibility that she's scared, and adapting to her new surroundings, but its unlikely that she would yelp. How quickly was the puppy taken away from her?

  4. I'm glad you adopted Jazzy, but this may be too much activity for her after being spayed.  She should probably not have made a trip to Petsmart.  Dogs that have been just spayed, need to be kept quiet and calm for at least a week after the spay, in order to heal.   If anyone is able to check (carefully) where the stitches are on her stomach, make sure that she has no blood or fluid leaking from the incision, and that it is still all stitched up. Also check to see that the incision is not very red-looking or very swollen.   If it looks like any of those things, you'll  need to call the vet.

Did the shelter give you any pain medication to give her?  If you have any worries about her, and she continues to yelp, take her to your regular vet to get checked out.  Good luck.

  5. Have your Mom schedule an appointment with a vet. I am surprised that shelters adopt out dogs that haven't healed from surgeries. She should probably have some mild pain relievers...did they give you any for her. Did the shelter explain that she needs to be kept quiet for at least a week after the spay? It's best to take her to a vet, if you don't have one yet, look them up online for your area and pick one and make an appointment to take her in. The vet will be able to tell you what's going on with her and answer any questions you have.

~note~ I don't know of any "real" vets on this site. I know there are a couple "real" vet techs, but the most they could suggest to you online is a trip to a vet for an evaluation. Good Luck with your new Jazzy!

  6. a vet would have to examine her.  You can NEVER tell by a description.  It could be a number of things.

  7. Hi, I am not a vet, but I can sure try my best to help..

She might still be in pain from the surgery. I would give her some time to rest, maybe about another week

If this continues for a while, consult a vet..
