  1. That's a pretty ambitious question you have there and there are many ways to go about it. The easiest way , would be to go to geocities and build a website using the pagebuilder, this should be a one , two , three, drag and drop. Of course it won't look as nice, you'll have banner ads, and some lame url like geocities.com/username etc.... but it is the simplest and quickest method. It involves no technical knowledge setup, initial cost (its free and doesn't cost a dime. Great if you want to fool around before creating the actual website) and by default yahoo will publish your site!

The alternate route would be to learn Adobe Photoshop (takes a month), some HTML (2 weeks), some CSS (1 week) and Adobe Dreamweaver (Macromedia got bought over by Adobe a while ago). Get a domain name (a url like myspace.com , yahoo.com etc... your .net or .org ) from namescheap (cheapest place i have found). Now you can either store it online on some website or host it at home. It depends on how involved you want to be.

Seeing as this might be your first website, I would like to suggest using a Content Management System (CMS). I know it sounds scary, but its not. Its really simple and involves clicking check boxes and filling out text. So it is as simple to use as e-mail. But it also gives you the power to add HTML code if you really wanted or needed to, thus it has the best of both worlds!   You'll have the ease of website tools and flexibility of using code (if you ever get adventurous). Its nirvana.

  2. If your brand new to the whole thing then go to www.godaddy.com and purchase a domain name for $10.00. Then go to http://www.hostgator.com/ and get a hosting package for $5.00.

Then go into cpanel. at the bottom of the screen is a link to Fantastico and a big blue smiley face. Click that link. One the left is a link to wordpress. Click that link follow the steps and now you have a site online using a CMS.

That is the fastest and easiest way.

  3. alright, there are alot of diffrent ways you can do this and accomplish this. More than I can explain but I can give you a good push in the right direction.

There are 2 Basic ways to create a website, the use of a software editor, and a basic HTML text document. The first is much easier because writing in script is very technical.

If you can get ahold of a copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver, that is the best software for the price, there are other, less advanced softwares out there that have better prices, but if you want a good one, you want dreamweaver.

You can design a website however you want, but it is not an easy task at all. but you can do it if you have the correct manuals and software, or the know how.

Now to upload it, you either can get serverspace, which I can direct you to Yahoo.com's Geocities area. You can create, if you do not already have a yahoo/geocites account, an account and upload the files that you have created for your website on your computer. Without actually talking to you and divulging information, the rest is self explainitory but you can find many helpful hints on other sites such as the ones listed in my sources.

  4. You can find step by step guide on how to make a website at website like http://oktutorial.com/webdesign.htm .

  5. There are a lot of free websites out there and a lot of times they have it set up to walk you through the steps.  Type in free websites in your browser and you will get a lot of hits.  Good luck.

  6. check the CMS section of this site : http://www.graphicsresources.net/

  7. For a free web host account, they are usually pretty simple. Just go onto their site and read their instructions.

For a "real" web site, here are the concepts you have to understand:

Web server or Web host- This is the actual computer where your files will lie.

Domain name - This is the "www.youraddress.com"

FTP - File transfer protocol. This is the method for uploading files to your web server.

HTML - HyperText Markup Language - the language that web pages are written in.

    Steps:

    1) Register a domain name and get a hosting account.

    2) Get the FTP information from your web host so that you can upload files. You will need an address (usually the same as your domain name), a username and password.

    3) Create a web page (see below)

    4) Using FTP software and the FTP information you got from you web host, upload the file to your web host.

(Filezilla is free FTP software - http://filezilla-project.org/)

    Beginner's guide to FTP:

    5) Test it out and experiment. You need to play around with the software to understand it all.

For creating web pages, there are several options:

    1) CMS - Content Management System. This is a pre-made, customizable web site to get you up and running fast. Examples are Drupal or WordPress. You download a zip file, extract it, then upload the extracted files to your web server. Each CMS is different, and there is a learning curve for each one.

    http://wordpress.org/

    2) Wysiwyg - or a "What you see is what you get" editor. An example is DreamWeaver, but there there are other ones, including free an open source editors, such as Amaya, that you can chose from. What this kind of editor does is create HTML files for you.

    3) Code the HTML yourself. This has the highest learning curve, and will involve understanding a lot of code that you may not want to bother with. However, this IS the language of the web, and its a good idea to know the basics of it.

    Hope that helps.

  8. I started on Piczo a long time ago (I was 10 or 11). I then moved onto Freewebs, and from there I moved to free hosts that supported PHP.

You really can't just 'jump' ahead. Beginning is a very important part because you learn HTML and some CSS.

If you do know HTML and CSS, and your host supports PHP, I recommend checking out WordPress or Textpattern. Both are excellent CMS/Blogs. WordPress has so much documentation, so it is easy to learn quickly.
