Question:

AP English Lit; should I take it?

I will be a senior next year and I'm only taking two AP courses: AP Art History and AP Psych. This year I took AP Lang and got an A in the class and got a 4 on the exam. I have done very well in my language/english classes in the past, but my AP Lang teacher advised me not to take AP Lit because "it's the book club."

I love discussing things and analyzing them (including writing essays)--which is what our AP Lit class is focused on at my school. I also know the teacher, as she was my Language Arts teacher freshmen year and the advisor of the Literary Magazine.

The problem is that if I find a book boring, I have trouble getting through it. I'm worried that this would cause me trouble in the class. Please give me advice if you have taken the class (or not!) Should I take it anyway? Thanks!

  1. Take it... the test was easy for me, and I hadn't read any of the books!

  2. I took it last year, and I think it was a really good decision. I had an awesome teacher though, so if you know yours and think she'll do a good job, then I'd definitely take it. I used to hate writing essays and mandatory reading, but after the class I feel like I've really gotten better. There is a lot of reading, but in the end, every book that you read is on the list for a reason; they really are all excellent books. Idk, its obviously up to you, but I'd take it, just because I feel like I learned a lot in terms of comparing literature and analyzing a lot of different types of writing. and I got a 5, so it was worth it in the end!

  3. I'm taking it. You prolly know that its going to have a lot of Literary Devices. Here you should get this book if you plan on taking it, its called "Glossary of Literary Terms" by M.H.Abraham. This book is by far the best.  The books are very boring, I advice you start reading some now, you may have already. Some books include the Great Gatsby, Beloved, Oedipus, some shaksperean stuff.
