  1. Honors is great, however AP is like a college class, and if you get a good grade in that, it will give you mad credit for college.

  2. No, unless your school is small and not well known. If so, passing the AP exam could vouch for the quality of your school's courses. In reality, most colleges do not scrutinize over your individual classes. They may look at what type of classes you took. For instance, consider this scenario: you have a 3.6 and another guy has a 3.8. You took science course, while he took guitar.  Both of you would like to get into a biology program. Considering that the other guy has not taken many science courses, your 3.6 looks better than his 3.8.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way -- especially for large universities. Sometimes it is better to take a non-honors/AP course if you will get an A in it as opposed to a B. That's because they are both 4.0's weighted, but a B is a 3.0 unweighted.

Anyway, admissions employ several different methods for screening high school students. I would focus on your overall GPA (weighted and unweighted), extracurriculars, and personal statement. One last note: The personal statement can make it or break it, so really work on that. Don't worry about the small stuff.

  3. There was a guy in my econ honors class who took the test and got a 4/5. AP Econ is really a lite load so its more or less, the same thing.
