AP Literature question. Jane Eyre. Would this be a bad idea?

We're reading Jane Eyre over the summer and on the list of requirements for this assignment, my teacher suggested we notice connections and associations between this piece and others that we have read (personally, not necessarily for school).

I want to explain how I think the description of Jack Reed in the beginning is very much like the description of Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter. Of course, I'll explain and reason why I feel this way but do you think this is a bad idea. I personally don't find Harry Potter to be a 'fluff' series or anything like that.

My teacher enjoys the series but doesn't consider it literature. Is it a bad idea to do this?

  1. I think it's not a bad idea.  The assignment said to notice associations between the novel and others that you've read.  That's what you did, regardless of how your teacher feels about the piece you made the connection to.  Don't get me started on why he's wrong about Harry Potter not being literature.

  2. Mmm maybe not a good idea.

watch Jane Eyre starring Ruth Wilson andToby Stephens for ideas. its sososo good.

  3. Harry Potter is nothing even close to lit.  However, since it is a modern writing, it would be interesting for anyone to read the comparison and contrast.  At the same time, I would say don't do this, because you are taking AP Lit, and your teacher doesn't consider HP to be lit.  If you can find something else instead of HP try that, if not then I guess go for it.  And, I LOVE the book Jane Eyre. I read it for an assignment in 10th grade and I really loved it.

    Good Luck.

  4. No, its not. And I think its an astute observation. She said what you had read personally. Don't let someone else's opinion make you feel bad about your reading material. The important thing is that you read!

  5. If you're worried about her taking it seriously, maybe you try to work in a 3rd reference; something a little more serious? But just because it isn't an old classic doesn't mean it's not literature.

  6. I would say if your teacher doesn't consider it to be literature, I wouldn't do it because she might feel biased and grade based on her opinions. I've had it happen :-/

But if you feel you can really make a good case for it then do what you think will work best!
