In general, is the mean of several observations more or less variable than single observations from a population?

  1. The standard deviation of a set of numbers measures the spread of observations about the mean.

    As the mean is just one number, there is no variation. With several observations, there will be variation in general, except for the special case in which each observation equals the mean (all the variables are the same value).
