Question:

AP art concentration ideas?

First off, thanks for taking the time to read this!

I'm taking AP art this year and have some ideas for my concentration, but I don't know if they are strong enough (a concentration is a unified body of works, that convey an underlying visual idea or conceptual theme). Some of my ideas are...

- Capture the beauty within the overlooked, to show that even the most insignificant artifacts have relevance. (e.g. paint a toilet, yet with my own interpretation, make it beautiful)

- Investigate the anatomy of the human form, whilst attempting to conceptually define the human condition.

- Depict the symbiotic relationship between two contradictory acts (e.g. creation & destruction, yin & yang)

- Taking objects associated with childhood, and relate them to a bigger meaning or show a parallel to a significant state of affairs we face as a society, implying our society is so sheltered, we view violence and the destruction of the environment as mere childsplay. (e.g. paint frozen ice pops melting under a child's chalk drawing of the earth upon a sidewalk. Would reference how the polar ice caps are melting due to global warming, and how America has adopted a child-like naivety to this issue).

- ?????

Which idea should I pursue? Any suggestions on more ideas? Thanks!

  1. I like the last idea and the first idea.  I would however urge you not to be so literal.  You want someone to have to really think about your art.  If you paint a toilet they know automatically what you are saying.  Take it a step further.  I would also encourage you to really research each of these ideas.  Look for artists who have done something similar, look for songs, movies, and literature that involves these topics.  Your teacher will be very impressed with your initiative.  Also remember that when you are applying for schools you want your portfolio to be less obvious.  I hope this helps.  I am an artist and elementary school art teacher.

  2. I like the last idea best!
