AP classes in freshman year?

Well i'm going into my freshman year and have all honors classes. I'd like to change one or two to AP classes. My question is, to get into AP classes, do you need certain grades? To have completed certain classes? Is it hard to get in? My school offers free AP classes so i'd like to take advantage of that. && also, what kind of AP classes are available (usually, at least)

Last but not least, last year I took advanced math which is algebra 1 and this year they put me into algebra 2 honors..did i not skip geometry? I thought that was after algebra 1?

  1. It may depend on where you go, but to get AP classes, they look at your grades, test scores, and sometimes even teacher recommendations.

I'm not sure about the math thing, though, sorry.

  2. well for ap classes you normally have to get a previous teachers recommendation. and it depends on what school you go to on what ap classes they offer. like my school has a bunch of ap classes offered but some schools only have a few.

as for your math class, depending on what school you go to depends on what order you take your classes. where i go it goes algebra 1, geometry, then algebra 2, but yours may be different. i say your best bet would be to talk to you guidence counselor and get their advice on what they think you should do.

  3. I would not suggest taking AP classes in your freshman year; most schools don't even allow it.  They require that you take a basic/honors class in that subject and get good grades before you can take the AP class.  However, it is different for every school.

Also, although the AP class may be free, the test is not.  The test costs about $85-90 per test depending on what your school charges and is required for AP students (at my school, if you don't take it you don't get the extra grade point for your GPA).

And yes, you should be in Geometry. Talk to your counselor right away.

  4. Usually you don't start AP classes until junior year. Most people, like me, take AP US History instead of honors us history junior year along with other choices for electives.
