  1. I work in a pet shop.

Just so you know, 90% of the job is retail, only 10% is animals. You don't get them out randomly and play and stroke them- you run tills, deal with customers, stock shelves and tidy.

So write in your cover letter that you are a team player- that you are interested with the animal world and think you would be a key person in the team- you're good with people, and have a caring nature, but are a hard worker who is a good time keeper. Focus on the /retail/ side whilst hinting you are a quick learner- so you can learn about the animals- and are caring, but don't say things like 'I like animals' or even 'I know how to handle animals'- the job will be mostly retail and customer care so it's focused on being a good team worker and good with people.

Of course you need a resume- it also has what schooling you've done, grades you've got, interests, a bit about you etc.

Google 'resume templates' for more guidence on that.

I was sixteen when I applied to the job, and started working there on my seventeenth birthday. It was legally at sixteen for me to work there BUT I couldn't give medication until I turned eighteen.

I work in a big, chain pet shop in the UK but I still do a bit of everything- I clean out the animals on Sundays, sell items and animals during the week, run tills and put out delivery during the week etc. etc. If you're applying for some vague, pet shop post, it's liable to be customer care/selling. Even if you do have to clean them out, you have to be fast and it's fairly dull- you don't interact with the animals.

  2. What is the job you are applying for?

I work in Pet Care at Petsmart, and my job is totally animal care. Although I do sometimes have to field questions from customers and I am the one that gets animals for people who wants to buy them, I don't cashier or really SELL things. I come in and feed everyone, give meds, clean cages, socialize, things like that. It depends on the job you apply for. Some smaller places will want you to multitask and cover ALL of the duties. Stocking, cashiering, and caring for the pets. So it really depends on the store you're working in.

I started about 5 months ago. I did not need a resume, although I made one anyway, just in case. I agree with Law L about googling resume templates. That way you can figure out what qualifications you have that fit. It doesn't have to be all previous jobs, if you've only had one. Volunteering, hands on experience with animals, things like that will work. You may not even need it, but it's best to be prepared with one either way. It will also make you look a lot better than other applicants who may not have made one.

  3. Law L seems right...

I wanted to add though, If you want to work there for the animals, I sudgest that instead you apply at a kennel where people drop off their dogs for the weekend or week when they're going out of town. Then you actually get to work with the pets instead of just dealing with customers... :) Thats what I'm going to do anyway.

And at pet stores, those who do get to work with the animals I beleive are usually older. Like, over 18 for legal reasons I think. So if you're 16 or 17 looking for a high school job... yea...:/
