Next week I am going to get a stripped lower, and over the next few months I am going to buy parts piece by piece. My father builds ARs for himself and his friends,he told me he would do mine.I am thinking about what upper to get here in the next few months.Does anyone know where I can get a NAM style upper,I was wondering if I could find a used surplus one any ware.I want it to be in ok condition with the old style triangle hand guards, chrome lined barrel, bayonet lug and 20 inches.I just want the standard barrel not a match or target model. Can some one tell me a site where I can go to find one and how much will it cost. Also I have a friend with a FFL so ordering it won't be a problem.

  1. YOu might want to go to AR15.com.... There are far more knowledgable people there to help you...

    AR15.com.... Ask here...

    http://www.ar15.com/

Model 1 Sales might have what you need...

  2. Buy a NOVESKE, or purchase an assembled AR that's from one company.  Don't buy junk parts pieced together for a combat weapon.  In addition, buy alot of ammunition!!!

  3. Sarco had some old M16 uppers for sale a while back

I see them at shows alot for $200 minus the BCG

No need for an FFL you already have the only regulated part

  4. NO CLUE.

I will say that you should check with Armalite before you start. I know that a few years ago they made an AR15 in its original NAM style, for certain marksmanship programs where the gun must be a replica. The only difference was that these guns were tight, had a 1 in 8 twist in the barrel for heavy match bullets, had free floating barrels under traditional handgaurds, and used heat shields under the gaurds.

I never fired one, but over the years have fired custom, and commercial AR,s, and I own 2 Armalite target grade rifles. My Armalite,s shoot as well as any AR out there, or bolt gun for that matter. I did consider building, but the money you save is not all that much when you consider the quality of an Armalite.

One of my friends shoots a custom built AR, and he swears by DPMS parts, and I know they do sell uppers in many configurations.

If you still want to build, I,d look into  Brownells. I am a police officer, and get a discount. So if you are close to a cop, you can have him get on the LE/Military list, and Brownells will sell at the same discount a smith gets.

If you purchase the lower, I dont see the need for an FFL man, as that all the other parts are just parts. Good luck

PS I also had great experience with Bushmaster. Not the best quality, but darn good for the money.

  5. Ah yes, A Vietnam era upper...

    The classics never die....

http://www.sarcoinc.com has just the upper you desire!

You don't need an FFL dealer to buy an upper...You can buy it and have it shipped directly to you. The only part an FFL is required to order is the lower reciever itself. It is the part the BATF considers to be the "gun".

  6. Check out Sarco inc.. they have just about all you will need for a m16 a1 style build and at good prices.Good luck on your build. They are very fun to do and can be addictive.
