  1. Yes, they are two different cities. One is in Missouri and one is in Illinois.

  2. Yes. St. Louis is in Missouri and East St. Louis is in Illinois and the Mississippi River separates the two, but it is much more than just the geography of the two cities. They have different governing bodies at the city and state levels. They really have nothing in common except they happen to sit next to each other.

I am not judging either city. The East side has a bad reputation because, primarily, it is very poor. That is not to say there are bad or poor parts of St. Louis either, but downtown St. Louis is on the Missouri side. Downtown is the good part of the city because people really don't live there. It is big business and entertainment venues, but not like Chicago or New York where people live in those same buildings or right next to them.

In St. Louis, people go to work and play downtown. The poorer people live in the city (St. Louis or East St. Louis) and the less poor people live in the suburbs (St. Louis County or other Illinois counties).

This is purely a generalization, but you get the idea.

  3. there the same city in my opinion its only 3 miles from E St. Louis, to St. Louis.

  4. Yes, they are completely different. East Saint Louis is in Illinois, versus Saint Louis being in Missouri. East Saint Louis has a poorer reputation than Saint Louis.

  5. YES!  East St. Louis is in Illinois.  St. Louis (just SL) is across the Mississippi River in Missouri.
