  1. Odd- someone is marking a lot of right answers 'thumbs down'.

Most (well, pretty much 'all') young fresh and salt water turtles are carnivores- fish, worms, shrimp, arthropods, carrion, insects, krill, etc. (jellyfish for sea turtles).

Many species of turtles add some vegetation as they get older (sliders, cooters, etc.), but others stay pretty much carnivorous (snappers, softshell, map, etc.).

This makes sense- young turtles need a lot of nutrients and are more agile- they get more bang for their buck eating 'meat'. As they get older, slower, and bigger, they need to grow less quickly and cannot chase food as readily, so become more vegetarian.

    You did not ask, but...

    - Box Turtles are insectivores (75% insects, worms, bugs, carrion, etc. and 25% local plants, berries, mushrooms, etc.)

    - Grassland and arid habitat tortoises are almost totally vegetarians, with occasional bits of protein here and there.

    - Forest-dwelling tortoises eat about 15% protein to help them get nutrients that are harder to find in the low sun/high rain habitats.

  2. Yes they are..

  3. Many  turtles ( whether they are sea turtles, terrepins or tortoises) are omnivores. They eat both protien matter and plant matter. You can try to find out what different foods turtles eat by knowing which species of turtle it is.

  4. Nope, fresh and salt water turtles are omnivores.

  5. they're omnivores. i think they would rather eat meat though.

  6. Young ones are carnivores. When they get older, they consume a lot more plant material. At least most species do. Marine turtles are less likely to become omnivorous.

  7. sorta...that are omnivorous, which means they eat plants and meat

  8. Like what everyone else says, they are omnivorous. Although baby fresh water turtles start off more carnivorous but as they grow to adulthood some eat more vegetable matter.

  9. I had a fresh water "western red belly slider" turtle who acually got sick because he wasnt getting enough protine in his diet.  The vet asked if i was giving him feeder fish (which i wasnt, just the pellets) and if not to give him 1 or  2 feeder goldfish a week.

  10. They are omnivores meaning they eat meat, fish, worms, and fruits.
