Question:

ARMY WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS *Please look*

I have a question. My husband is leaving for Basic Training on Monday, well, to go down to MEPS and be shipped the next day. He recently gained quite a bit of weight, they told him they would like him to be 184 and he is now 210. I'm not sure if it's because of muscle or what because he has been working out constantly. But, his recruiter told him that if he is too much over weight they can change his MOS. (Carpentry Masonry) and put off his ship date. I know that he can lose a little of the weight before he leaves but I deffinately know he won't meet 184. Is this true? That they can change his MOS? We have reviewed his contract and it says nothing about being able to change his MOS due to weight issues. Please someone inform me, I am extremely worried. Thank you so much.

  1. The figure he needs to worry about is body mass index.  He can weigh as much as he wants as long as he falls under the allowable fat percentage.

  2. Yes its true. you can contact my friend at juanramirez@yahoo.com hes a military specialist who will help you in any questions.

  3. ask them to check his body fat percentage...if its all muscle its gonna be hard to loose..thaqt weird though, just get a test.

  4. yea they can do all that since his ship date will be changing they might not have a open slot for him in that mos whenever he gets to ait so they will adjust him to the needs of the army.

  5. why did he bulk up like that? well, first thing is the doctor at the MEPS station will have to do a body (fat) tape test and he still can ship. well that recruiter is lying about changing his MOS. there is two way he can change his MOS is (1) that your husband change his mind (2) the school is over book and there won't be another open in the next 7 to 11 months, and he still want to ship on the original shipping date.

I haven't seen anyone was turn down because he is to musclar to join the military.

  6. Ok, right now the army is scraping the barrel when it comes to quality recruits.  If he's overweight, they MAY hold him back. Or they might send him knowing he'll lose the weight in basic.

If he's overweight on the scale the next thing they're do is "rope and choke".  That means they measure the widest part of his waist and his neck (the bigger the neck the better).  Next they compare those figures with his weight.  He could still be within weight standards, so don't worry too much if he's been bulking up.

Finally, the army WILL use strong-arm tactics to get him to change his mind.  Pressuring him to change his MOS because he's overweight is a joke.

Imagine your in a car salesman office.  They use some of the same tactics as the military to you to buy a car at their price.

My suggestion to your husband is if the army pulls any BS this late in the game, tell to get up and walk out the door, or at least act like he's not interested in the army anymore.  The recruiters will first say he's a soldier now (which is not true until takes the second oath on Monday) or use some other tactic to keep him from leaving.  Once he has their attention (meaning they're about to lose their recruit) they will change their tune and might even offer him something new or cash or something else.

I've played the games with recruiters from two different branches.  Its all the same.  Be ready to walk if the deal isn't right for your husband and you.  Also make sure he reads the contract.  If something's not right about his contract, tell him not sign it.

    Hope this helps.  Good Luck.

  7. If they put him on a waiting list (until he looses the weight) his MOS (Job) may not be there for him and he will have to get either the same MOS, if thye still need people in that MOS or another one.
