Les Chardons coach is wary of the league leaders as his side prepares to entertain Olympique de Marseille at Stade Marcel Picot, this Sunday
Elie Baup’s side is unbeaten in the Ligue 1 this season after four games, and Jean Fernandez is optimistic about his side’s chances against the Rhone giants.
While talking to ligue1.com, the 57-year-old stated that Nancy are capable of handing OM their first defeat of the campaign.
The coach added that there are several quality players at Les Chardons, who have the ability to win matches on their own. Matches against bigger teams are always tough but Fernandez feels that Nancy can handle the pressure.
"We have quality in our team too, but we’re also young and lacking experience. Now we’re going to enjoy the games against the big teams and we’ll try to get the best results possible.”
While many have criticised Nancy’s defensive style of play, Jean Fernandez has backed his side to play their natural game against the Rhone giants on Sunday. The coach added that the way Les Chardons play is their strength and he feels no reason to change
that.
“The idea is to play, but you can only make the best of what you’ve got. To play beautiful football you need great players,” the former Auxerre coach told reporters.
Fernandez said that every team wants to play attractive and beautiful football, but against bigger teams, they need to be cautious. Paris Saint-Germain, LOSC Lille and Olympique de Marseille are dangerous sides and it’s better to play defensively against
them.
However, the 57-year-old has said that Nancy do not intend to sit back and play defensively. The coach knows that the match against league leaders will be tough but is optimistic about his side’s chances against Elie Baup’s side.
“I believe we have good players and we want to play attractive football. But teams like Paris, Marseille or Lille are much stronger than us, so it’s tricky but we want positive result.”
