AS Roma still interested in AFC Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg – Dutch Eredivisie news
Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maarten-Stekelenburg-c22998, has been on the radar of AS Roma for quite some time now and a deal is likely to be materialised in the coming weeks.
Furthermore, following the departure of Alexander Doni to English Premier League side, Liverpool, the Dutch custodian’s arrival at Stadio Olimpico seems increasingly likely.
The highly-rated goalkeeper’s exceptional performances for the Amsterdammers have attracted interest from a host of elite European clubs including Atletico Madrid, Juventus FC, Arsenal FC and Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Giallorossi remain the favourites
to land the shot-stopper’s signature in the ongoing summer transfer market.
Danny Blind, De Joden sporting director, admitted that the Serie A outfit are still interested in signing Stekelenburg, though he revealed that his side are yet to receive a concrete offer.
“We know, through the player’s agent, that Roma’s interest in Stekelenburg is still alive. At the moment though we have not received a concrete offer. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the next few days”, Blind said while talking to the media.
La Maggica earlier tabled a bid of 7 million Euros for the Dutch Number one, but the Amsterdammers management clearly indicated that they will not let go of their prized asset for anything less than 10 million Euros. The Dutch International’s current contract
is due to expire in the summer of 2012.
Ajax management was reportedly looking to offer the highly-rated goalkeeper an extension to his ongoing contract, but the Amsterdammers’ sporting director has now clearly indicated that his side have not renewed Stekelenburg’s contract.
“We haven’t offered Maarten an extension. He is an exemplary professional and an excellent goalkeeper. He will remain our captain. He still has a year on his contract with us and we know that there is interest. Now we’ll see how the situation evolves”, Blind
concluded.
With the Giallorossi interest in the 28-year-old growing, the Dutch International is unlikely to be pursuing his career in the Dutch top tier in the upcoming season.
