The 21-year-old Frenchman has become an undisputed holder at left-back this season but what he earns at the club is peanuts compared to what other players are earning
At AS Saint-Etienne, politics and especially wage caps sometimes result in very awkward situations.
Les Verts offer more than 90,000 Euros per month as a maximum fixed portion, a share that may be only 60% of revenues the club generates. Certainly this decision is understandable in the light of the current economic crisis but sometimes, it can be followed
by a certain stinginess.
After signing his first professional contract last year, Faouzi Ghoulam received a salary of just 5,000 euros per month. A year later, the left-back has become an important part of the starting XI under coach Christophe Galtier. However, despite his rapid
rise, the 21-year-old is still waiting for an improved contract extension in which he would naturally want an increment in his salary which is closer to the football standards today.
ASSE claim that Ghoulam was made an offer of 15,000 Euros per month after he played 15 games in Ligue 1 for the Rhone giants. The proposal is a minimalist one for the player who is currently not ok with.
What infuriates Ghoulam is the fact that his understudy, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonathan-Brison-c19008 is earning more than him. Brison gets 35,000 Euros per month which is certainly way too high for a player who still hasn’t really stamped his authority in the team.
The president of Les Verts, Roland Romeyer, while talking to L’Equipe, expressed his annoyance at Ghoulam’s attitude towards a contract.
“He loses money every month while I win. He should not come crying to me later.”
The same situation surrounded Loris Nery and the young defender is no more playing any role in the first team.
However, coach Galtier would certainly appreciate if the club decides to match the player’s salary expectations as Ghoulam has played an instrumental role in AS Saint-Etienne’s push for a place in the Europa League next season.
Under contract until June 2014, Ghoulam may even try to run down his contract and then leave Stade Geoffroy-Guichard for free which won’t look good on the club at all.
