While talking to the media, Nicollin thoroughly criticised AS Saint-Etienne for not being able to handle the Hilton scenario professionally.
The outspoken Montpellier president claimed that AS Saint-Etienne was not a professional club and even went out as far as suggesting that the club heirarchy was a bunch of bums. He even went as far as calling the club being run by imbeciles and said that the Hilton fiasco would never have happened if Caiazzo was more active than Romeyer whome he said was not competent enoguh to run the club.
Before the game between Montpellier and Saint-Etienne, there was a lot of controversy regarding the validity of the work permit of Vitorino Hilton who joined Les Verts this summer from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 as a free agent.
However, Les Verts officials were clearly not happy with the way their club was criticised by one of the most controversial figures of French football.
Following the retorts of Nicollin, Etienne release a statement on their official website.
“Following the statements of Mr. Louis Nicollin, AS Saint-Etienne have decided to complain about the public insults. The vulgar, abusive and aggressive tone of the president of Montpellier has damaged the image of the club, it’s officials and more generally of all those who defend the interests of the club,” the statement read on the official website.
When asked by http://www.francefootball.fr/ regarding AS Saint-Etienne’s reaction to his remarks, Nicollin said that he was not at all worried by what the club said on their official website.
“Very well. If it gives them pleasure, they are right. I never knew that Saint-Etienne was an amateur club. Among professional clubs, it has no standing. But I am not worried as everyone does what they want,” said the outspoken president of a club that is in great form in the Ligue 1 so far this season.
The two sides will be meeting eachother on March 24, 2012 and the game would definitely be a crunchy affair between the two sides whose respective chairmen especially Montpellier’s have done well in starting a new rivalry.
