AT&T DSL lines if you use them, you know you get normal DSL that is about 80 kbps. But then you can upgrade to their elite DSL line but im supposed to get a 3 MB download connection but when i download files it only goes up to 300 Kbps :[ i know that 300 kbps might not even be such a bad download rate can you guys please tell me what i should do? i dont know why my internet is so slow. I have called AT&T they say that its normal for me to have a 300 kbps download connection -_- Thanks for the help

  1. maybe router who knows. maybe yo uare in a far away zone.

  2. Like Tracy L says, you are confused between killobits (kbps) and killobytes (KB/sec).

Try the AT&T/Yahoo speed test sight (while not doing any other networking) http://helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/

Typically DSL speed will be about 85% of sync speed due to overhead.  With Elite service I get over 5 Mbps (5000 kbps) download.  But KB/sec for actual downloads can depend upon how busy that particular server is, internet routing, etc.

  3. I think maybe you have bits and bytes confused. 366KBps is indeed 3mbps so if you are reading 300KBps (which I bet you are) you are indeed very near the 3Mbs connection!

This happens often because 8bits (b) = 1 byte (B) and most people don't notice the difference in the upper and lower case letters when doing speed tests.

To really see what you have visit

http://speedtest.net  or http://speakeasy.net/speedtest  see the results in numbers that will match.

    Then see

    http://www.speedguide.net/conversion.php

for how to convert when viewing different bit/byte results!
