When I use Yahoo music, I get the following error code:

playback engine cannot play because the specified protocol is not supported?

I used to play songs all the time after i paid my subscription and now every time I try to play a song on the yahoo jukebox it goes from requesting stream to saying. Playback engine could not play the file because the specified protocol is not supported, If you typed a URL in the open URL dialogue box try using a different transport protocol (for example http or rtsp) I dont know what the heck to do please help!

I already deleted and downloaded the engine again and it still does not work.

  1. The solution to this problem could be simple or difficult to diagnose.  The simple solution is to upgrade Windows Media Player (WMP) 9 to Windows Media Player 11:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...

BTW, WMP 11 is a Yahoo requirement for Yahoo Music Unlimited.  If that doesn't work (and unfortunately it usually doesn't), then you have to dig into some WMP options.  Before I go into that, a little explanation might help.  Yahoo Music Jukebox (YMJ) uses Windows Media Player (WMP).  The requirement for WMP 11 is to make sure that YMJ has all the necessary codecs for playing the music (if it doesn't, you can get the protocol not supported message).  To make matters more confusing, it appears (this is my opinion) that Yahoo uses different code for subscription users.   Start up

WMP and click the down arrow under Library.  In the drop down list click More Options. Click the Network tab (toward the top).  Make sure all the boxes are checked (with the exception of Ports).  Now click (under streaming proxy settings) HTTP and then click Configure.  Now make sure the circle is ticked (should have a bullseye) for use proxy settings of the browser.  Here's the catch.  In some instances, click the Configure button for HTTP will not work.  If this is the case, then that is why you are getting the message.  Correcting this issue is not always easy.  If you are using proxy settings (proxy settings are typically used at work or where your computer is in a network such as schools) you may have to get your IT administrator to help you.  Assuming this is a home computer hooked up to a standard Internet Service Provider, then don't use proxy settings.  See what happens and if you still have problems let me know under your question (add details).  No guarantees on this one.  :(
