Question:

AT&T services?

I just saw a news story stating that AT&T plans to "end its dwindling pay phone business by the end of 2008"

As I understand it, AT&T stands for American Telephone and Telegraph. Do they still offer telegraph service? If you're not sure, call their customer service number and ask. Let me know what you find out.

  1. The modern AT&T history doesn't even acknowledge the existance of telegraph in their history outline.

However, it appears that their "official" exit from the telegraphy business was in 1991.

But, the teletype machine started replacing the telegraph as far back as the 1920's - 1930's.

In 1999, morse code was officially retired as the official SOS distress signaling method on the high seas world-wide.

Ham radio operators are probably among the few people left that still use Morse Code (CW) as a means of communications.  However, it is no longer a licensing requirement, so it is slowly dieing from there too.

I am a ham radio operator since the age of 13 years old (over 40 years ago) and using CW morse code was my favorite means of transmission and communicating.  20 WPM was my top speed achieved.
