AT&T taking over HP as Byron Nelson Championship sponsor from 2015
The Byron Nelson Championship is a golf tournament which is held in Irving, Texas, United States of America, with a prize fund of $ 6,500,000. The tournament is played every year in the month of May and is part of the Professional Golf Association Tour.
The Byron Nelson Championship is played on the Four Seasons Resort and Country Club.
It was announced on Friday that the new sponsors of the tournament as of 2015 will be AT&T. The official signing is for the 2015 and 2016 Byron Nelson tournaments.
However, the Senior Executive and the Vice President of the AT&T said that the contract signing of two years is just a start and the company hopes to represent the tournament in the years to come.
The present sponsor of the Byron Nelson Tournament is HP, who has had a history with the tournament. It has been the title sponsor of the tournament since the past ten years.
Charley Spradley, who is an official of the HP Company said, "With AT&T assuming the title sponsorship of our major fundraising event starting in 2015, we are taking steps to secure the future of the Byron Nelson Championship that funds our innovative services
for at-risk and troubled children".
AT&T has made a major impact on the golfing arena. It is one of the most lucrative sponsors of the sport.
The tournaments sponsored by the AT&T Company include, the Masters Tournament, the Pebble Beach National Professional Amateur, which is a part of the Professional Golf Association Tour and the National operated by the Tiger Woods Foundation.
The President of the Tiger Woods Foundation, Greg McLaughlin said that the AT&T has been working side by side to expand the Tiger Woods Foundation.
McLaughlin added that the bond between the Tiger Woods Foundation benefited the Company as well.
The President of the Woods Foundation, expressed plenty of optimism and said, "Their sponsorship began in '07, so this is an eight-year contract, which is phenomenal in this day and age".
"We're hopeful they're going to want to continue with the event. I know they like D.C., and they like the event".
Due to the controversies that followed Tiger Woods back in 2009, after he was caught having affairs with numerous women, the relationship between the AT&T Company and the Foundation faced a massive setback.
The Byron Nelson Championship was won by the American Jason Dufner. The professional American golfer won with a -11 score and went home with the first prize of $1,170,000.
There have been top players who have won the Championship in the past. The likes of Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson are some worth mentioning golfers.
