AT&T Championship Tees off today

The AT&T Championship will start in San Antonio, Texas today. Set to take place at the Oak Hills Country club golf course, this event is part of the Champions Tour. The Champions tour is a golf tour organized by the PGA Tour and is for golfers 50 years of
age or older. The events on this tour are staged in either the United States or the United Kingdom.
There is a saying that the AT&T Championship has been a breeding ground for rookie winners on the Champions Tour. The trend was broken by Phil Blackmar, but till then the championship was won six consecutive times by rookies and nine times overall since
1986.
With so many great golf legends competing, the AT&T Championship is one to look out for. One player especially in the limelight for the event is Bernhard Langer. This German player tied for seventh place at Oak Hills last year but is determined to improve
his position. Bernhard has won five times in the Champions Tour this season. Langer is undeniably the steadiest golfer on the circuit with 13 top-10 finishes this year. He is also currently leading the money list with $2,407,189.
Corey Pavin is another member of the Champions Tour that’s on the watch.  Corey has already made many headlines this year after being the Captain of the American Ryder Cup team. Even though Pavin’s team was defeated by the Europeans, he really led them well.
He was an amazing captain for all the members, but things just didn’t quite work out how he had planned.
The last tournament Corey played, The Adminstaff Small Business Classic, he finished with a tie for fifth place. He has also won on this golf course in 1988 when he took the Texas Open title. He might just be the seventh Champions Tour Rookie to win the
event in the eight past years.
Another player on the lookout is John Cook. Cook has won the championship in 2007 and 2008. Last year, after leading the first two rounds, John finished in fifth position. In his nine rounds at Oak Hills, Cook has carded a scoring average of 66.7. In one
of the events, he won an event record of $569,100. Being this close to victory just a year back, John would surely work hard to earn his third AT&T Championship win.
Russ Cochran will also be in the limelight this weekend. Last year, he shared the lead through out the first two rounds but had a downfall during the last round and hence couldn’t win. This year, he has won twice on tour and is on number three in the Charles
Schwab Cup standings. Looking at this and comparing it to his luck from last year, the Kentuky resident might just be the most enthused player on the field.
After Cochran, Fred Funk is another player to watch out for. He won the AT&T Championship in 2006 and always feels at home in San Antonio. Coming in fourth in the Schwab Cup race, Funk is definitely on a roll this season. Looking at the way he’s going, Fred
will surely bring his good game to one of his favourite courses.
The Schwab Cup Championship is the final event of the season on the Champions Tour. This event is played in late October each year and was formerly known as the Senior Tour Championship. The top thirty players in the standings qualify for the Championship.
This year the venue for the Schwab Cup Championship will be the Harding Park Golf Club in San Francisco California.
This championship is the second last event of the Champions Tour this season. Hoping to qualify for the Schwab Cup Championship, the players will surely try to improve their standings. The At&T Championship will tee off today at 10.30 with J.L Lewis up first.
