Question:

ATA question, Purchased tickets through travelocity to go to Vegas in June. How do I get my money back?

My Dad, husband, and brother all were going to Vegas in June. ATA has went bankrupt. We called travelocity and they told us to go through the insurance company to get our money back. The ins. co. told us that bankruptcy is not covered under the policy. Shouldn't ATA have to pay back all the people that haven't used their tickets yet? Is there any way to get our money back or are we just scre###?

  1. This was just announced today.

Major travel agencies like Travelocity, expedia were probably running around having emergency meetings.  (aloha went down 2 days ago too)

It may take a couple of days for them to iron out policy and procedure- it's not always the same.for every airline every bad travel event.

Depending upon what is going on, I have seen other airlines step in and offer reduced fares if you held a ticket on an airline that went under.

I have seen airlines care less when another airline went under.

I have seen some airlines that went down, or had a strike  take days to send out policy to the travel agents.  some airlines say "you have X amount of days to request a refund.  If you dont' request it, then you get nothing"

My advice:  Give it a few days to allow the travel agency to get it's policy figured out, and training out to the agents.

    Call back.

If you talked to an agent who had no information (because it just happened) you may have gotten the WRONG information.

  2. Bankruptcy generally protects people and companies from having their bones picked over by people they owe money or services to.

  3. I have tickets with ATA also and if you paid with a credit card all you need to do is call your credit company and let them know whats going on and that you will not be receiving the service you paid for. If you paid with cash or check the process is not so simple and not guaranteed you will get your money back but the info on how to file is on ata's web site under FAQ's and there are some airlines honoring the tickets but youll have to call to find out how that works and if there are additional fees

  4. The only thing that you can really do is file in bankruptcy court.  They can tell them what they do and don't have to pay back, but people in these cases have to come forward and make a claim.

  5. Too bad, so sad for you.

If you didn't buy the insurance policy that covered everything under the sun then you can only join in the line of every other creditor wanting their money back.

You could check and see if another airline will honor the tickets but that's highly unlikely.

If you purchased with a credit card you should be able to charge back through them.
