ATMs in Buenos Aires...?

Question

Hi all, I'll be study abroad in Argentina for about 2 months and I was wondering which bank ATMS are the most popular in Buenos Aires to avoid those nasty extra charges! I was thinking about citibank...are those ATMS common in BA?

ps, I'll be staying in the palermo, recoleta, and retiro area..

The key is NOT the bank but the NETWORK

i.e Visa, Cirrus, Plus, etc.

Your bank should be able to tell you how much they will charge you back home and how much does the network (local bank) charge.

You will be better off, if you split between debit card (ATMs) and credit card.

Most of the big banks (HSBC, Citibank, etc.) have an affiliation with Cirrus.  So does Banelco (which is the local version of Cirrus).  However, all of these banks, and your bank from home, will impose a fee to withdraw money.  Best bet is to take as much cash with you as possible and use your credit card when you can, for purchases.  The only way to avoid paying international service fees is to open up a local account here, but you need a DNI (like a Social Security card) in order to do it.

That's good advice about using your credit card.  I believe that it gives you the best exchange rate.  Just find out where the ATM's are that your card uses and go and enjoy Argentina.  Great country and people.

Yes there are many Citibank ATMs but beware Citibank charges you a fee (I think it´s 2% of the amount) for every transaction outside the US. Other common ATMS are Banelco but I don´t know about the charges...
