ATP 2010; Top ten most exciting clashes this season – Part two
Here is the second part explaining the top ten most exciting matches on the ATP tour in 2010.
8. Rafael Nadal against Robin Soderling; French Open title battle
Rafa versus Robin became a rivalry after French Open competition last year. The Swedish tennis ace Soderling wanted to prove that last year was no fluke whereas current World number one Rafa sought revenge, even if the left hander openly denied it.
In spite of the fact that the final match on Nadal’s favourite court was not that close; however it showed the sporting aptitude of both the contenders without any question. Rafa, in the end, turned out to be the winner as he got the better of his Swedish
tennis foe in three sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-2, and 6-4.
"I lost last year because I was not well-prepared, and I had very low morale last year, as well," said the Manacor born who after his final victory also jumped to number one in the world.
He prevented all of his eight break points, blasted one more ace than his foe who has a much greater serve and exhibited not only a perfect lesson in defensive tennis, but also showed how to pick up each offensive chance on the run.
The result, therefore, in the end looked like a mundane straight-sets win for the top ranked Spaniard.
 7. Roger Federer against Robin Soderling; United States Open quarterfinal
In spite of the fact that the Swedish tennis ace Robin Soderling lost this match in the end; however he did put up a good fight until the end and challenged Federer’s supremacy.
The 29-year-old Swiss started the match quite confidently and despite of a few setbacks in the middle turned out to be the winner in the end. He eased through his service games as if the right hander was playing in ideal conditions on an indoor court. His
serve, without any question, made all the difference in the end.
Federer after the match said, “I can hit a serve even when somebody wakes me up at 2AM.”
Indeed, it was a wonderful display of the tennis as Roger Federer proved why he is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all times on the tour.
6. Juan Martin Del Potro against Marin Cilic; Australian Open fourth round
One of the most interesting things about this match was the way how both the players ran to retrieve every fired stroke by their foe, and how well they improvised when their strong ground strokes were retrieved.
Both despite their tall stature, danced well around the net and hit the ball strongly all around the court.
The tennis fans not only witnessed one of the most power filled tennis clashes but also experienced finesse in between. Both of them played some high quality tennis and gave their hundred percent without any measure of speculation. The way they fought against
each other showed their level of fitness and determination on the court.
It was termed by the tennis experts as the battle of giants in the end. Marin Cilic emerged victorious in five sets and thus made his way into the quarters. The final match score was 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Marin’s tournament campaign was ended in the semi
final round at the hands of Andy Murray and was seen nowhere after that for the rest of the season.
