ATP Power Rankings, Top five players in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London – Part II
Here is the second part highlighting the top five players in terms of power ranking points, who are most likely to win the season, ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.
3. Gael Monfils with power ranking points of 737
For most of his professional life, fans all over the world waited for the French tennis ace, Gael Monfils to live up to all the promise he showed during his junior career. He failed to perform consistently on the tour right from the start of his career.
Often, Gaels played superbly just to crash out in the opening round in the following tournament or pull out as a result of injury.
Prior to his final four clash at the BNP Paris Masters, Gaels had won one set from Roger in five encounters. The left hander’s modus operandi, particularly when the Swiss tennis maestro took the opening set, was to resign him self to loss which was what
inevitably followed.
This battle gave the Frenchman what he required to win, a screaming crowd of Monfils pushing him to take that first-set tiebreak.
Skill has never stopped him. Rather, his self confidence and decision making prowess have eroded his abilities in the past. Therefore, considering his aptitude, Gael Monfils of France definitely has one of the brightest chances to win the season finale in
London, provided he plays confidently on the court.
4. Andy Murray with power ranking points of 418
The top ranked Brit Andy Murray, who lost his final eight round against Monfils at the BNP Paribas Masters in Bercy, dropped down to number four this Monday after Robin Soderling claimed his first Masters 1000 title in Paris.
The Swede’s victory in Paris blasted the Scott out of his accustomed perch. The world number five however still has the chance to triumph in London without any doubt. The right hander, who is injury free at the moment, could very well end up as the number
three contender by capturing the crown in the concluding event on the ATP tour.
5. David Ferrer with power ranking points of 408
The Bercy event featured drama apart from the irritating music escalated by Davis-Cup boisterous crowd noise. When the contest got underway, there still a total of three spots remaining and five contenders in contention to make their way into the season
ending finale in London which is set to start this Sunday.
The positions would be filled depending on particular criteria unfolding during this final event of the lengthy tennis year.
David Ferrer of Spain breathed easier, however, once Monfils brushed aside Fernando Verdasco in the round three. For Ferrer, it implied a return to the Barclays ATP World Tour after his previous appearance here back in 2007.
The professional tennis ace from Spain made his way into the final round of the year-ending finale in his debut run three years ago, going undefeated in his round robin group. That is all the more remarkable keeping in mind that both Novak Djokovic and current
number one Rafael Nadal were in his group of the draw. Ferrer faced and was toppled by the sixteen time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer in the title battle. However, until that clash, the Spaniard looked unstoppable.
This season, the tour’s greatest over-achiever will be set to do battle again, looking for a result as good as or better than the one he posted back in 2007. However, lightning does not strike over and over again in the same position.
