ATP Power Rankings, Top ten players on the tour (Part I)
The Asian hard court swing that was stretched to a time period of three weeks and featured a total of five tournaments concluded last Sunday in China. The players, who added one more trophy in their career list includes Guillermo Garcia-Lopez at the Thailand
Open, Mikhail Youzhny at the Malaysian Open, Rafael Nadal at the Japan Open, Novak Djokovic at the China Open and Andy Murray at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
Now the European season has started this week in Moscow and Stockholm. With four open positions yet to be filled in the World Tour Finals, this is a major stretch for those still expecting to qualify.
Not surprisingly, all the winners of the Asian season are highlighted in this part of top ten men’s tennis power rankings.
1. Andy Murray with power ranking points of 1080
The twenty-three year old Murray leads the ATP tour in terms of power ranking points of 1080 at the moment.
World number four Murray took a couple of weeks break after surprisingly departing from the United States Open in New York back in July and then competed in Beijing and Shanghai.
In his quarter final round at the China Open in Beijing, Andy was unable to find his rhythm versus a heavy hitting Ivan Ljubicic. However, the Brit number one did well to bounce back to form at the Shanghai Rolex, capturing his sixth Masters 1000 crown without
even missing a single set.
His two setter final victory over the world number two, Roger Federer, was highly impressive as he played some great tennis just at the time when required the most. The final match score was 6-3,6-2.
After parting his ways with his coach, Miles Maclagan, the right handed Murray has so far won a total of two Masters 1000 crowns in 2010. However, the twenty-three year old has yet to lift his first Grand Slam trophy. The Scott needs to improve his game
further to achieve this target in the near future.
2. Roger Federer with power ranking points of 891
World number two, Roger Federer, who stands at number two in the ranking points behind Murray, took a lengthy break after his semi final exit at the year’s final major, the United States Open in New York. Federer, who skipped the Asian swing completely back
in 2009, decided to take part in Shanghai this season.
The Swiss tennis maestro did well to win his initial round matches in straight sets with a high degree of ease. He totally dominated his Swedish opponent, Robin Soderling in the quarter final battle and played almost flawless tennis against Novak Djokovic
of Serbia in the final four battle. However, the Swiss was visibly bothered with Andy’s counter-punching tennis and eventually lost to him in two straight Masters 1000 title battles.
Committed to four more championships in the final five weeks of the year, the Swiss native is looking to end the season on a strong note. With fewer points to defend as compared to the Serbian Djokovic, Federer is in good position to end the year in the
top two on the eighth occasion in a row in his career.
3. Novak Djokovic with power ranking points of 830
World number three, Novak Djokovic, from Serbia after ending as runner up at the United States Open, also assisted his country to advance into its first final of the Davis Cup in the next week.
His decision of adding Todd Martin to his coaching team didn’t turn out well in his favour and it took some time for the Serbian to get back in form and the confidence he required to capture a title as he did at last in Beijing.
However, the Serbian has yet to take a Masters 1000 crown in 2010. So will Djokovic be able to defend his points and win a crown in Paris?
