ATP Power ranking points; Roger Federer tops Rafael Nadal and others in 2010 – Part three
This is the third instalment describing the top ten contenders from the men’s side in terms of their power ranking points in 2010.
5. Robin Soderling with power ranking points of 453
Last four competitions; Barclays World Tour Finals, Bercy, Valencia and Stockholm
Current ATP ranking; 453
After making his way into the semis back in 2009 and riding high on his maiden Master 1000 crown only a week before in Paris, a lot was expected of Soderling, however the number one Brit, Andy Murray left him floundering in his opening clash at the season
finale in London. Roger Federer, on the other hand, also filleted the Swede like a fish in his final round robin match.
He only managed to win his second match against David Ferrer of Spain.
Despite of his early exit at the prestigious event in London, the former world number four, Soderling had another season of progress under the supervision of his coach Magnus Norman who parted ways with Soderling a week ago due to personal reasons. Magnus
and Soderling remained together for over two years on the tour. During this period, Soderling’s overall game improved a great deal including his mobility, attacking power around the net, focus as well as serve.
The professional tennis ace from Sweden captured a total of two crowns in 2010 apart from his three other title battle appearances this season. It also includes his second French Open final showing in a row. His title victory at the BNP Paribas Masters
took him to a career high of number four, only for a couple of days, though.
The most surprising news, however, for Soderling’s fans in 2010 was his announcement of splitting with his coach, Norman, who now wants to give more time to his family and home.
The Swede, despite suffering early round exit in the World Tour finals, is definitely here to stay and will look to play even better in 2011.
6. Gael Monfils with power ranking points of 279
Last four competitions; BNP Paribas Masters, Valencia, Montpellier and Shanghai Rolex Master
Current ATP ranking; number twelve
The professional tennis player from France Gael Monfils, once again is back in the top dozen on the very first occasion in over a season following his superb Paris run, as he overtakes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as the highest ranked player from France.
The 24-year-old Monfils, who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2004, started his 2010 campaign by playing at the Brisbane International where he finished semi finalist to Radek Stepanek in two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1. His other
season highlights include title victory in Montpellier, runner up appearances in Paris, 2010 Mercedes Cup, Tokyo, semi final showings in SA Tennis Open and quarterfinal efforts in 2010 Open 13, the 2010 Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open, the 2010 Open de Nice Cote
d Azur and United States Open in New York.
The Frenchman is without any question highly athletic, flexible and quick on the court and knows well how to rise to the occasion just at the right time.
If the Paris born remains focused and stays fit on the tour, he can definitely regain a top ten ranking next year on the very first occasion in nearly two years.
