ATP Tennis Update: Federer wins dream finale
Roger Federer roared triumphantly, as he thrashed world number one Rafael Nadal in the final of the ATP World Tour Finals Championship. With this milestone, Federer won the title for the fifth time and collected the 1.6 million dollars reward on offer. He won the match in just one hour and thirty-seven minutes with the final scorecard reading, 6 – 3, 3 – 6, 6 – 1.
Federer started-off the game in classic style as he outpaced, outwitted and outgunned the Spanish world number one, in the first set of the match. He made sure that the critics never make the mistake of referring to him, as a spent force again. His victory also ensured that an erratic year, by his own standards, ended on a high after he won the Australian Open in January.
Sporting a bright red shirt, Federer lost the second set to Nadal, after the Spaniard hit back to level the match. It looked as if both the players were unable to play to their best potentials at the same time, with Federer’s best coming in the first set while Nadal’s came in the second. It was the third set of the match that really showed the caliber of Roger Federer or the Swiss Maestro as he’s more affectionately known. The twenty-nine-year-old broke Nadal’s serve in the last game of the match, as the Spaniard netted successive shots to give Federer the trophy.
While Federer appeared in his sixth World Tour Finals’ final, it was Nadal’s first. However Nadal did not allow the demons of last year’s round robin group stage exit,to upset him, as he played some of the best tennis to reach the finals. His three hour defeat of Andy Murray in the semi-final is already being hailed as one of the greatest matches ever in the event’s history. Those three hours spent forcing Murray out of the tournament may also have been the reason for Nadal’s sluggishness in the ending minutes of the match.
The ATP Tour Finals Championship final was able to attract some well-known celebrities at the majestic O2 Arena, which was also home to an electrical atmosphere, courtesy of some 17,500 fans. The guest stars included Diego Maradona, Thierry Henry, Princess Beatrice, Ronnie Wood and Kevin Spacey.Despite his modest temperament, Roger Federer will be ecstatic at the thought of defeating his great rival Nadal, in such an absorbing manner and at such an important juncture. If anything, Roger Federer just shot himself into fabled eternity as he looks forward to capture his lost glory in 2011.
