ATP World Tour Finals 2010: Andy Murray beats David Ferrer, earns semi-final berth
The number one Brit Andy Murray made his way into the semi final round of 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Thursday after getting the better of David Ferrer of Spain in two sets to finish second in Group B. The final score line was 6-2, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, the four time London winner, Roger Federer also overpowered Robin Soderling to top the group with a perfect mark of 3-0 this week in the elite eight man field.
Seeded number five to win the title, the 23-year-old Murray has reached the final four round at the prestigious event in London on the first occasion in his career since 2008 where he was bundled out by Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets. Last year, the
Scott couldn’t make it into the semis despite going 2-1 in the round-robin portion.
Murray, while commenting on his victory after the match, said, "I think it is great. All the best players in the world are here. It is not an easy thing to do. I qualified the first time I played it. Last year was obviously tough for me. But this year I
have won two matches against very good players. I am glad I got through to the semis."
Two times major finalist, Murray, is in quest for the biggest crown of his professional life and his third ATP World Tour title in 2010, after posting wins at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 competitions in Shanghai and Toronto before falling at the hands
of world number two Roger Federer on both occasions.
The Scott opened his account in the season finale with straight set victory over Robin Soderling from Sweden on Monday. In his second round robin clash, Murray however put up a disappointing show as he suffered a two setter loss at the hands of Swiss tennis
maestro, Roger Federer.
He started his third match against Ferrer slowly and committed two backhand unforced errors to lose serve and trail behind at 0-2. However, the right hander this time replied right on time and dragged his opponent all around the court with the help of his
frequent changes in speed and direction that left Ferrer reeling. Murray, within no time, took six games in a row to earn a lead of one set.
The Spaniard’s nightmare continued in the beginning of the following set as well as Murray quickly broke serve and did well to maintain his dominance and thus sealed victory in the end. World number five Murray, who is finishing in the top five on the third
occasion in a row, wrapped up the match in sixty nine minutes. He blasted a total of twenty one winners to cruise past his opponent and confirm his spot in the semi final round of the World Tour Finals in London.
“I thought Murray played a very good match. I served very badly all this week. And with these players, it is very difficult. If I do not serve well, it is difficult. I do not think I was focused in the match with Murray. I tried my best. But today I had
a lot of difficulties, physically, mentality. It is hard to play with these guys. If I am not perfect, 100 percent, it is impossible,” admitted David after his loss.
Despite the fact that Ferrer lost all his three matches in the elite eight man field, the professional tennis ace from Spain said that he is quite satisfied with his overall performances in 2010, which has seen him capture a total of two ATP World Tour crowns,
return to the top ten rankings and qualify for the London event on the second occasion in his career.
