ATP World Tour Finals 2010: Roger Federer and Andy Murray dazzle in style
If Roger Federer’s current form is any indication of the dangerous mood he’s in, then his opponents will probably be seeking the services of some bomb shelters. His ruthless decimation of David Ferrer in his first group stage, round robin match speaks volumes
about the Swiss Maestro’s tennis skills. In only one hour and twenty five minutes, Roger Federer sent the Spaniard packing as he picked up his first win of the tournament in style. The scorecard could not have been more discernible as it showed Roger Federer’s
brutal annihilation of David Ferrer in a 6 – 1, 6 – 4 enthraller.
Roger Federer, making his ninth consecutive appearance at the end of season championships, considered by many to be a downgraded Grand Slam, looked in fine form after his shock defeat at the hands of Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon earlier
this year. He looked impervious to everything that David Ferrer tried to stop Roger Federer from turning the match into a lop-sided event, while a beaming Diego Maradona nodded his approval from the stands.
The Swiss, who has won a record six Wimbledon titles just down the river from the O2 Arena, where the stars of men’s tennis are battling it out currently, looked supremely in command of the match right from the word go. In an arena that is usually reserved
for the greats of the music industry, the Swiss was able to prove his mettle to his detractors as he notched up another career win over David Ferrer. He waltzed to a 4 – 0 lead before Ferrer tried his best to put some brakes on Federer’s domineering tennis
play all over the court. Things again got a bit tricky for Federer in the second set however, but he overcame the hurdles to take his career record against Ferrer to 11 wins and no losses.
In the other grand match, the Scotsman Andy Murray demolished Robin Soderling to notch up the 120,000 dollars of prize money that is available to everyone for each round robin win. The Scotsman produced a fine array of dazzling tennis mastery to beat the
world number 4 Soderling 6 – 2, 6 – 4 in front of a capacity crowd of 17,500.
Murray entered the O2 Arena where the atmosphere could not have been more dissimilar to the hush of Wimbledon’s Centre Court. He was cheered on by the crowd to notch up a 6 – 2, 6 – 4 win over the Swede Robin Soderling who will now have to work exceedingly
hard to make it past the round robin stage.
Andy Murray is the local favourite as he tries to win the end of season championships to end his year on a high, after having seen a mixed trend in his performance throughout the year. His next hurdle on the road to glory is the world number two Roger Federer
who defeated David Ferrer to claim his first win of the tournament. Murray was beaten by Federer in the Australian Open final earlier this year, and he would be aiming to exact revenge from Federer for that loss.
The Scotsman’s destructive skills were quite clearly visible as he brushed aside his opponent in just 80 minutes of truly captivating tennis. However, what hurts Murray’s chances of succeeding is his inability to maintain consistency in his performances.
The match against Federer will be a litmus test for both players as they vie to prove their critics wrong.
The ATP Tour Final Championships in the O2 Arena of London are already proving to be one of the hottest events of the circuit. With subtle displays of finesse and delicate tennis, the sport is turning more into a form of artistic dictation. With Roger Federer
and Andy Murray already having cast their first blows, the tournament guarantees more entertainment and pure adrenaline rush as some of the greatest names in tennis history compete to eradicate the blemishes that have gathered on their reputations.
