ATV Gov. s***w? what is that..?

Ok so i know alot of things about my quad.. i have a 2002 raptor 660, and the other day i had it out when i was taking the plastic off to get the carbs off, and someone was over, he said i should take the governor, or govenor s***w out and it will go faster? he pointed to a s***w in the box above the thumb throttle, what is it? and what does it do?

while your at it take everything that weighs the machine down off. fenders misc. nutz and bolts, brakes, etc...



My comment was about gaining speed the less weight the faster you'll go. I say enjoy your machine and leave it stock. You can adjust the throttle control s***w but only so far.  I had many friends tell me this or that when i was younger{and even today} I still ride my machines while they're fixing theirs.

It's a restrictor s***w.

It restricts how far the thumb lever will move - for new riders, to prevent them from going wide open without realizing what they're doing.

Loosen the lock nut and s***w the s***w all the way in - then take note as to how far you can move the thumb lever.

Loosen the s***w all the way (without removing it) - then move the thumb lever and note the difference.

Leave the s***w attached, so dirt won't get into the throttle housing.

If you're that curious as to how it works - loosen the screws on top and remove the top cover.

just unscrew it and you will go faster

A governor limits how much gas an engine can get. It will ultimately limit how fast and how much power a vehicle can have.

So if your s***w is truly a govern er s***w than by backing it out or removing it will allow you to give the engine more gas and to rev it faster for more speed and power.

Be careful what you ask for though, These governor screws are in place for a reason. And that reason is so that you don't injure yourself.
