I'm planning to move to Australia for a few months to take a course and there are a few places I am able to take it. Any suggestions as to where would be helpful! Good points or bad points would be excellent! If you know anything about the following places let me know!

Melbourne (Surry Hills)

Sydney

Parramatta

Perth

Wollongong

Canberra

Thanks!

  1. It does depend what you like to do. I live in Melbourne and I love it here. Generally each of the capital cities has a certain 'stereotype' they live with. Sydney is a bit glitzy, while Melbourne is a bit more laid back (but is typically seen as Sydney's 'little' sister!). Canberra is quite small and more like a little town. I've visited there a few times, and while very pretty, I found that (coming from Melbourne) I ran out of things to do. I don't know much about Parramatta or Wollongong, but hear that Perth is very pretty also. I guess it's Pro and Con is that it's so far away from the other capital cities.

I love Melbourne. It has temperamental weather at times (but Melbournians generally embrace it!), great shopping, a cafe and restaurant culture (with fantastic dining to match), lots of parks and gardens, AFL football (if you don't know it, it's worth getting to know!), and has a lot of great destinations to visit in Victoria. It's also around an hour's flight to Tasmania and South Australia, and not far to New South Wales (Sydney).

You mentioned Surrey Hills, which is also a good spot. It's a residential suburb probably about 20 minutes drive from the CBD, or there's good public transport also. THere's a lot of pretty houses around there, some good schools also, and some nice little shopping strips.

    Melbourne all the way!

  2. omg i live in Surry Hills!! although agreat place if ur only coming for a few months dont come to a surburban place. Melbourne in general is good but possibly a bit boring for a short term stay. for ur own sake dont go to Canberara, its known as the boring city to Australians and perth can be a bit bland as well and hard to find jobs (so im told). id say the best place is sydney because its more touristy, spectacular and has more an array of people. it depends wat ur after though.

i certainly wouldnt reccomend Wollongong though!:)

  3. What kind of lifestyle do you want ? :) that would help..

  4. Well, Melbourne is the best Australian city in my opinion (and I'm a SydneySider)

Wollongong and Canberra are often made fun of for being a bit of a hole- you won't get much of a city/party scene down there but the grounds are nice enough

Parramatta has a bit of a rep for being a bit rough- but as long as you're not purposely causing any strife, you should be right- it is a bit isolated from the city (about 40 mins) as well though.

Sydney (the City) is where I live- it is very convenient; it has good places to eat, shop, be entertained and nightlife but it comes with its' cost; it is rather polluted and noisy- but in a little while, you'll adjust- or perhaps you already have...

So it really depends where your interests lye- good luck with it!

Perth, apart from being the most isolated city in the world, is very beautiful with some of the best beaches.
