AUTOMATIC 10 POINTS! What kind of car should I get?

Question

I want to spend 10,000 and below on a car. I need it to have low-ish miles. I prefer something cute, or better looking. I have an Xterra right now, and I don't want to down grade I want something cute still.

I'm moving to college though and need to sell it for something with lower miles, and better MPG! (I get 12 =[)

A private sale 2003-2004 Nissan Sentra or Mitsubishi Lancer would at least be on the fringes of your price range. A 2002-2003 Mitsubishi Diamante might work too.

The fact is there is nothing better for under $10,000 than a Honda Civic.

Other choices are VW Golf or Jetta or Beetle. Mazda Protege or Mitsubishi Mirage.

Any one that you like the look of, runs good and meets what you are looking for. Just keep looking till you find what you like and then try to get a good deal.

I would like to inform you that camrys corollas, and civics are great cars, even if you might not consider them "cute."  If you really don't care whether or not it is a piece of junk, then I'm sure you can find something.  Otherwise, I would definitely recommend a used Lexus (although I don't know if those earn the cute qualification...).  As an earlier person said, a Miata would also work well--since they don't cost too much (especially for a sports car).

The Honda Fit would be a great choice.  Cheap, cute, and super good mileage!  You could get an almost-new one for 10k.  

Also, check out Saab 9-3 ... a little pricier, maybe, but an AWESOME deal if you get one used.  My cousin has a 2004 9-3 that gets 32mpg on the freeway, plus it's gonna have more style and features than anything else out there at that price range!  The 2004+ body style is one s**y s**y car.  9-5s are great deals, too!

Stay away from VWs... they are horrible cars!!  Pray to God you never in a crash in one!  Unsafe and unreliable!

It'd help if you could specify what you consider "low-ish miles" to be.  It used to be a car was washed up at 100k miles, now most of them are just barely warmed up at that milestone.

"New body shape."  What exactly does that mean?

For under $10k you aren't going to find all these things in one car.  You're going to have to give a bit on something.  Keep your eyes peeled for the oldest example you can find of the Mini - not the original ones from the 60's, but the BMW version.  Some of those may be getting down toward $10k, and they get decent mileage.  Everyone will want to be your friend in that car.

Scion xA.  Same chassis and engine as the boxy xB, which is one of my personal favorites, but much less common.  A tad smaller too, but about 35mpg highway, so it's easy on the wallet.

Also seriously consider a somewhat older Jetta or Golf.  They're flingable, historically deliver good mileage, and are nearly as nice as BMW at a lower price point.  You can find models as little as five years old in your price range.

You'll get better responses to your questions when you don't automatically disregard the most obvious answers as "stupid."  You want cheap and economical, the most obvious answers are Corolla and Civic.  If you think that's stupid, that's your narrow-minded problem, not ours.
