  1. The purpose is to decrease amount of wall plugs used by your entertainment system. I would recommend not using it as running power from your receiver to your Subwoofer will slightly increase the temp in your receiver and if your powered subwoofer should short out you could damage your stereo. Also, do not use this plug for any other house hold appliances as it will certainly not be rated to the amperage of a standard wall socket.

  2. I would not use it. Your switched/unswitched outlet is for CD players, tape decks, tuners DVD players etc etc. Low wattage things like that.

Most switched outlets are only good for 100 watts or less. There is no advantage to connecting anything to that outlet except something that can not turn on with a remote. Outlets on receivers are kind of moot now days. Back in the old days many components had outlets and you could chain all kinds of components together (as long as the combined wattage was less than the outlet's rating) and turn everything on with the receiver at the touch of one button. Now days with everything having remotes it doesn't really offer any benefit unless you have everything in a cabinet and  have no place to plug in a DVD player or CD player. But again it is meant for your smaller powered components. Keep your sub plugged into the wall.
