Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is targeting the Europa League title with his new look Spurs side.
Tottenham take on Lazio on Thursday night, and the Portuguese manager has urged his players to make history by winning the championship.
Villas-Boas finally earned his first three points as manager in a 1-3 victory against Reading this past weekend. The manager is hoping that his players can build on their first victory of the season and go on to do great things.
The Portuguese tactician is determined to lead his team to ‘something special’ as they prepare for a tough fixture against Italian outfit http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lazio-c39775 on Thursday night.
The North London club has only made a few appearances in Europe in the past seasons, and have won the UEFA Cup back in 1984.
Villas-Boas is no stranger to the competition, having led his former club Porto to the Europa title in 2010, thus winning them the quadruple that season. The manager is determined to win the competition again and will be delighted to bring the title to White
Hart Lane.
Spurs have been drawn into a challenging group with Greek club Panathinaikos and Slovenian outfit Maribor in Group J. In previous seasons under former manager Harry Redknapp, Spurs have not emphasised on the European competition. The club mostly fielded
out the reserve squad in order to focus on the Premier League and Champions League qualification.
However, Villas-Boas insists that it is a top priority for him and has challenged his side to win it. Speaking about the competition, the manager said that it’s very important.
"It's a tough competition, you have to play 15 games before you reach the final, so it's hard and strenuous and the best teams out of the Champions League are playing,” he said.
"It gives access to the European Super Cup and, for me, I always thought it was a prestigious competition and it should be promoted like that. After the Cup Winners' Cup disappeared, it is not only about the Champions League.”
"If we can win a trophy, that represents a lot for Tottenham Hotspur's history as well and would be something really special."
