AVCA Team Academic Award goes to Brown University Team – Volleyball News
In the recent memory, the Brown University Women’s Volleyball team has been awarded with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 season. The Brown Bears were among more than 500 teams at national level that
earned the honour.
The Brown Bears have been named for the AVCA Team Award on account of their excellent performance in the academics during the school year. Most of the players on the Brown team maintained at least 3.30 GPA.
Speaking of their previous progress, the Brown Bears did not grab a lot of success on the centre court during 2011 regular season. The team appeared in a total of 23 games and dropped most of the matches. At the end of the last season, Brown women’s volleyball
team stood with an overall record of 7-16. They played twelve Conference USA matches and ended up with 2-10 record. Brown squad pulled off success in three out ten matches, while playing at home. They played nine matches away from home and managed to win only
two.
The team was headed by their long-time coach Diane Short, who is with the Bears for about two decades. Scott Blanchard and Wayne Holly were attached with the team as assistant coaches. Nevertheless, the team could not perform up to the mark and finished
the season with ‘not so good’ record.
However, the players of the Brown volleyball squad showed great progress in the classrooms that they settled for the AVAC Award. It was initiated in 1992-1993 academic year and since then it has gained much popularity. The Team Academic Award has seen an
increase of 760 percent after its inception in 1993. So far, NCAA Division I has recorded the highest-ever total number of recipients, honouring a total of 103 programmes.
The great boom in the number of recipients of the AVAC Team Award was seen after 2000-2001 season and now it is one of the fastest growing awards programmes.
Diane Short, the mentor of Brown Bears, expressed much delight for the honour that her team settled for. In the next run, she has great many plans to lead her team to success in the 2012 season.
