AVCA names seven WAC players to 2011 All-West Region team - Volleyball
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recently announced the names of seven WAC volleyball players who clawed their way to the 2011 All-West Region team. After careful analysis of players’ performance, following seven names were added to the
roster of All-West Region team:
Kanani Danielson – University of Hawaii Emily Hartong - University of Hawaii Jennah DeVries - New Mexico State Meredith Hays - West Region Freshman of the Year, Kelsey Brennan - New Mexico State Brittany Hewitt – Hawaii Allison Walker - Idaho received
Danielson has been named to the All-West Region team for the third straight year. Previously, she got hold of the ‘two-time first team All-American and third team All-American’ awards. Moreover, she emerged as the Most Valuable Player at the WAC Tournament
during the regular season. She is three-time WAC Player of the Year, who is ranked 38th nationally. An outstanding record of 4.13 kills per set is also credited to Danielson. She became the seventh Rainbow Wahine to record 1,000 career kills and
1,000 career digs, earlier this year.
Hartong also spent a successful year. She played for University of Hawaii and enjoyed the limelight for her high hitting percentage (.378%). She joined her team-mate Danielson in the 2011 All-West Region team. This is the second straight year that she found
her name on the roster of All-West Region squad.
DeVries of New Mexico State University worked out 13 double-doubles in the regular season. She closed her career with 4,051 assists and settled for 4th place all-time in the Aggie record books. Moreover, she was ranked 47th nationally
with 10.78 assists per set. After being nominated for the WAC Tournament all-tournament team, she also made it to the All-West Region team.
Hays, the 17th ranked player in the nation, claimed a WAC-best 4.94 points per set and 4.42 kills per set honours in the recently ended season. In acknowledgement to her extra-ordinary skills and mesmerizing performance, she was
chosen as the West Region Freshman of the Year. Furthermore, she was named to the all-tournament team at the WAC Tournament and also was a first team all-WAC selection.
Brennan is a three-time first team all-WAC player, who has had proved her endeavours as hitter and blockers. In this regards, she was ranked second in the team. She comes on number 35 on the overall ranking of national players.
Hewitt is the third Hawaiian player who managed to put her name on the All-West Region team. She led her team in total blocks in each of her three seasons. She is a three-time all-WAC honouree with first team honours in each of the last two seasons.
She currently ranks 28th nationally with 1.32 blocks per set and was named to the all-tournament team at the WAC Tournament.
Walker is the seventh player which has been selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association for the All-West Region team. She tallied 13 double-doubles in the regular season. Walker is ranked second in the league and 25th in the nation with 4.24 kills
per set.
