Question:

AVCHD file format compatibility

I'm planning on buying a Sony HD hard disk drive camcorder which will record AVCHD videos. However, I've heard that AVCHD can be a little tricky to work with - is it possible to import them to Windows Vista Movie Maker to do some simple editing? Is it then also possible to downscale the videos so I can make lower quality copies for posting on the Internet?

I'd prefer free solutions, but if you feel it is absolutely essential, I could also buy some software. Thanks.

  1. If you are Windows 7 user, your Windows Live Movie Maker supports for AVCHD files importing and editing. But it does not work on XP and Vista.

If you have difficulty in importing and editing AVCHD files to Windows Movie Maker, have a try Aunsoft MTS Converter which helps you to decode AVCHD to AVI、WMV、mpeg  for easily importing and editing in WMM.

  2. Mac AVCHD Converter for Sony camcorder is the supreme software helping Mac users convert Sony AVCHD files to commonly used video formats, like MOV, MP4, MPEG, DV. All AVCHD files recorded by Sony camcorder can be supported: HDR-CX7, HDR-AX2000, AVCHD DVD Handycam Camcorder, HDR-SR11, HDR-UX20, etc.

You can do some simple AVCHD video editing with Sony AVCHD Converter for Mac, like cutting large AVCHD files into small video clips, joinning several AVCHD files together as a single one, cropping AVCHD video to specific size that you need, adjusting the video display effects, including brightness, saturation, contrast, etc.
